The Origins of Custom Exhaust Installation

In today’s world, exhaust installation is as common as changing out seasonal tires. However, this wasn’t always the case. Believe it or not, it wasn’t until 1963 that the first exhaust purification devices was installed. From there, things only got better.

Purification devices

The introduction of purification methods was a huge success. Taking environmentally harmful gases and transforming them into something less toxic was undoubtedly a game changer in the exhaust world. So much so that by 1968, nationwide restrictions were adopted. These changes not only protected the environment but also helped increase fuel efficiency.

While emissions controls continued to advance and become more precise, a new found interest in the vehicle’s exhaust system had begun.

The many working pieces of the system

When dissecting a vehicle’s parts, often you end up with much more than you bargained for. For instance, the brakes are a complicated system of rotors, pads, wheels, and sensors. Your exhaust system is no different. Here is a brief overview of the components making the system a whole.

MANIFOLD

Designed to distribute air from the engine into the cylinders, the intake manifold is an essential element of the exhaust system. Without proper functioning, your engine could misfire, you may experience performance issues, overheating, and coolant leaks.

FLEX PIPE

As the name suggested, the flex pipe provides flexibility to your exhaust system. The extra flex allows your system to move slightly when accelerating or driving in rough conditions. Without the flex pipe, the exhaust system could crack and leak.

CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

Located between the manifold and the muffler, the catalytic converters are another emissions tool. Oxidizing toxic gases into nitrogen and oxygen, your vehicle becomes safer for the environment and those around you. A properly functioning catalytic converter can also increase the performance of your vehicle.

OXYGEN SENSORS

While specific components work to trap and oxidize toxic fumes, the oxygen sensors monitor their efficiency. The sensors also help in determining the amount of oxygen flowing within the exhaust. The engine can then adjust for maximum fuel efficiency.

MUFFLER

Possibly the most known component of the exhaust system is the muffler. While most associate a muffler with horrific noises and smells when deteriorating, the piece holds a greater purpose. When properly working, the muffler passes the converted gases from the car in a quiet and nonchalant manner.

Let’s talk about those mufflers.

As we said, the muffler is one of the most well-known pieces of the exhaust system. As chances have it, it is also the piece that people love to customize.
