3 Signs Muffler Repair Is in Your Future

muffler repair

Mufflers are a key part of what we do at Lou’s Custom Exhaust. That’s because the muffler is an essential part of your car’s exhaust system, customized or not. Driving a car with a damaged muffler can spell bad news for both the car and the driver. The muffler doesn’t just expel exhaust from the car, it keeps those dangerous exhaust fumes away from the driver and passengers. But how do you know if you need a muffler repair? If that question is on your mind, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are three signs that you might need a muffler repair.

Change in MPG

A change for the worse, that is. Everyone is keeping an eye on gas usage and fuel efficiency these days. So a sudden spike in your car’s MPG is cause for concern for more than one reason. The functionality of your exhaust system directly affects your car’s fuel efficiency. If you notice that your car is suddenly guzzling gas when it didn’t before, that’s a likely sign that your muffler is damaged.

Extra Engine Noise

Now, we know that part of the appeal of custom exhaust is some extra engine noise, but there are limits (some of them even imposed by law). If you’re like most people in NH, you spend a lot of time in your car. After all that quality time with your car, you get used to its normal engine noise. If it unexpectedly gets louder, that’s a sign that there’s a hole in the muffler. Age, rust, and hitting bumps too hard can all cause holes to form in your muffler. You can often see if there’s a hole in the muffler by getting under the car and looking. (When the engine is off, of course!)

Exhaust Smell Inside the Car

There are a couple of things about cars that everybody knows. A big one is that the exhaust stays outside the car. If you can smell exhaust fumes from inside the car, that’s a definite sign that you need a muffler repair. It’s not only bad for your car, it’s dangerous for you and your passengers, too. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, and you do not want to breathe that in. Take your car to a mechanic you trust right away if you smell exhaust inside your car.
