Increased Engine Performance
The horsepower and torque you can get out of your engine depend a lot on the diameter of your exhaust pipes. Most factory-made exhaust systems—and many aftermarket ones, too—use a “crush bend” to shape the exhaust pipes. The result is that the diameter of the pipe is smaller in the bent sections. This slows down the exhaust gases as they travel through the pipes. A quality custom exhaust build will use “mandrel bends” to maintain a constant diameter throughout the system. You can also increase the diameter of the pipes throughout the system to increase the exhaust flow. Be careful, though, if the diameter is too big, it can actually impede engine performance.
Better Quality Materials
The mild steel automakers use for factory-made exhaust systems is normally just okay. It will last for a while, but it deteriorates over time and can lead to exhaust leaks. When you install a custom or aftermarket exhaust, you get the advantage of better quality materials. They are usually made of aluminized or stainless steel for increased durability.
