2 More Ways to Spot Cracked Manifolds

cracked manifolds

Exhaust systems are what we do here at Lou’s Custom Exhaust, so naturally, we pay close attention to every part of the car’s exhaust. The first part of the car’s exhaust system is the manifold, so if something goes wrong there, it affects the whole system. The most common issues with the manifold are cracks in the metal and gasket leaks. We’ve talked about ways to spot cracked manifolds in an earlier post, but there are a couple of other signs, too.

Here are two more ways to spot cracked manifolds, plus how those cracks form in the first place.

Metal Fatigue Cracks the Manifold

Cracks in the exhaust manifold form because of something called metal fatigue. Gases pass through the manifold at extremely high temperatures. Those high temperatures cause the manifold to expand, and then it contracts as it cools down. Over time, that weakens the metal and causes the manifold to crack.

The other issue that you can have with your manifold is a leak in the gasket. The gasket seals the small gap between the manifold and the engine block. It has to withstand the same high temperatures as the manifold and will wear out over time, causing a leak.

Extra Loud Exhaust Noise

A hole anywhere along the exhaust system will make the car run louder as sound and pressure escape. You know about the whistling and clicking noises that the gases make as they escape through a crack in the manifold. But if a crack in the manifold caused damage to the catalytic converter, you might hear a grinding noise or something that sounds like tumbling rocks. Those noises mean that the engine isn’t holding the correct compression. You should get it repaired right away to prevent further damage.

Increased Fuel Use

The manifold keeps the exhaust gases pressurized, which is part of what keeps the engine running efficiently. If there is a crack in the manifold or the gasket is worn out, the car requires more fuel to travel the same distances. Replacing the gasket or repairing a crack in the manifold will soon pay for itself in savings on fuel.
